Chapter Thirteen

The morning alarm screeched, waking Ben from a fitful slumber. Payton had left in the middle of the night. She’d cleaned and dressed his wound and told him about some blue plant that would help with the pain. The side effect? Uncontrollable horniness. Yeah, no. He didn’t need that.

At some point, he expected marital relations would be necessary with Adiya, although she hadn’t mentioned that part. He’d agreed to be her mate. With mating came sex and eventually babies. Wait. Could they have children?

He’d never really thought he’d have any. He loved the military and everything that entailed. Being in the Marines wasn’t the reason he didn’t have a family, a lot of his friends had them. Some of those friends had also left behind distraught widows and children when they’d died in combat. Ben didn’t want that.

When he eventually settled down, he figured it would be due to old age and he was too tired to fight anymore. At thirty-two years of age, that time was approaching quickly. He’d already told his commanding officer this was his last tour of duty. He had nine more months, a promotion, then he was done with active combat. He’d planned to stay in the Marines, join the other old folks behind a desk, possibly at the Pentagon.

Ben stared at the dirt wall in front of him. “Now look at me. Went and got myself caught by aliens.”

Porkchop chirped from her place on his shoulder. Ben breathed in deeply. He let out a ragged cough that was junky and made his lungs rattle. Great. Not only was he battling an ankle infection but being out in rain and exposed to the elements had probably given him pneumonia.

Breathing had been getting harder since yesterday, but he hadn’t mentioned it to Payton or Adiya. He didn’t tell them that he could no longer feel his foot either.

Adiya would’ve pressed him to leave right away and Payton would’ve worried over something she couldn’t control. She’d already fussed about his wound. When she’d taken off the bandage and had a good look at it, the realization finally hit her. He wasn’t going to make it out of The Hunt on his own. Payton had dropped all talk about him beating Level Three.

Before Payton left, she told him she would find him after she won. She hadn’t said, “before I return to Earth”. Ben didn’t think she would be going back any more than he would They’d kept their conversation light, talked about the possibilities of exploring different planets.

He wasn’t okay with never returning home, but he was making himself okay with it. Every day for the past few years, he’d known it might be his last. He’d long since prepared mentally for such an occurrence. Knowing that didn’t mean he gave up on life, it was about creating peace within himself and active duty.

This was different. Instead of the finality of death, he would go on living, while his mom and sister would believe he was dead.
